How should I spice/herb my foods?

I’m 17, and I recently had to start cooking for myself because I’m vegan. The only ways I know how to flavor my food is with salt, black pepper, garlic, soy sauce and ketchup(not together). I feel like I’m getting too much salt, and I switched to the “lite” kind with potassium chloride instead.

I also read that the Mediterranean diet is low in sodium because they use spices and herbs to flavor their foods. So what are some food flavoring tips? I’m not into crazy flavors, nor Indian type food, so leave stuff like that out please. Thanks!

Answer
Mediteranean people use many different herbs, especially fresh ones, I am one and regulary use fresh basil, parsley, dried oregano and rosemary. I also use but less often, sage and thyme. I would at least get the first three as they are very versatile and widley used. All are easy to grow also. Red pepper flakes are also good along with Tobasco sauce.

Fresh Fruit Smoothie

A great post workout snack that should be on everyone’s dieting meal plan. Just choose any fresh fruit like bananas, passion fruit, papaya, apples, pears, berries and throw them into a blender with some low fat or soy milk. Add a few ice cubes to really bring out the punch in the drink. This is one of my personal favorites.

Vegetable Juice

All you need is a whole lot of fresh seasoned vegetables and throw them in a juicer. Now for green leafy vegetables, the greener they are, the more healthy the vegetable. Despite the smell and taste, this is one of the healthiest meals out there. This could also replace your meal. Here is a suggestion: wash your vegetables the night before or some time before you decide to juice them and leave them to drip dry. This will ensure that all the water comes out of the vegetable and your juice is purely vegetables.

Apple and Spinach Salad

The ingredients for this salad are: 2 tablespoons each of fresh lime and orange juice, 2 teaspoons each of Dijon mustard and honey, half a cup of freshly chopped red onion, 8 cups (8 ounces) of fresh baby spinach, 1 large cored and thinly sliced apple and a pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Whisk the juices, honey, mustard, salt and pepper together in a small bowl. Then combine everything in the larger bowl and toss it. Extra tip: top with blue cheese.

Diet and meal plans are basically, the answers and the contributors of a huge percentage towards the healing process for diabetes. Chemotherapy alone has proved with time to be disaster if nothing is done to the type and quality of diet and how it is taken. Take it or leave it; sugar and for that matter glucose the simple sugar, is the source of energy in all metabolic processes and beyond and no substitute is available unfortunately. While starch in its complex state, as a polysaccharide or disaccharide, demands that be broken into simple forms that cells require to burn in order to live.

As a matter of principle the rate of intake through our mouths is of paramount importance. Habits die hard, availability and accessibility of all food types, brings about the craving that breaks the same meal plan you need to follow. The focal point is to be food friendly and food discipline; that, knows your energy demands; what you eat, when you eat and how much you eat. Your nutritional demands are just the same as everyone else, but it’s basically how you pump the system that calls for care.

With respect to what you eat; you are advised to eat mainly plant derivatives; more fiber or cellulose; avoid refined compounds as chances are that sugar blending has been done to your disadvantage. The trick here is to avoid sugar laden foods directly, while you get the supply of other nutrients. When you eat, calls for discipline and not salivating at the sight of any food or snack along the road any moment. Eat at all meal times; don’t skip breakfast or lunch in the name of dieting or cutting weight to one meal per day; sugar must be supplied to the body all through at regular intervals.

How much you eat; calls for resizing to avoid gaining weight as this is a by product of poor eating habits. Build strong habits of listening to your body; you can add snacks in between but in controlled amounts. Eating small meals at regular intervals is the most appropriate format; without disregarding the other stated principles. In the name of dieting; choose starch wisely, fats wisely and proteins wisely; that is the goal.

Now that you have known your physiological weakness fully; you now move straight to what supplies you fiber best; which vegetables are these? These are mushrooms, managu (Solanum psedocapsicum, sacket, broccoli, kales, cauliflower, peppers, carrots, turnips, etc.) A Fact about fiber is that, its quantity is higher when natural and unprocessed. In almost all circumstances, fiber prevents the advent of a myriad of other would be diabetic complications like weight gain, heart disease and the overall risk factor of general wellbeing of the body. With fats, there is no doubt saturated ones are most risk and should be avoided at all costs.

The recommended ones are oils that fall in the class of free cholesterols – olive oil, omega 3, sunflower oil, soya seed oil – and many others in the markets all over the world. Protein rich diet especially plant protein, is best from peas and beans and not forgetting fish and poultry and don’t forget to remove the skin of poultry. The colorific value should be within a range of 20% and below to be on the safe side. Red meat should be avoided or eaten in moderation at all times. Drink plenty of water and eliminate alcohol completely. Not all fruits are good, you must select low fructose fruits; in general fruits are perfect suppliers of vitamins and some have been known to provide credible amounts of fiber.

Without forgetting the main store house of sugar – the carbohydrates, I will simply split into the basic direct sugar supply through our kitchens and the complex starch that takes long to digest and thus gives us a fairer chance of living longer with the disease. Why don’t you substitute sodas and ice creams with fruits? Sugar coated tea is a luxury avoid it. It is a matter of choice, balance carbohydrates; eat brown rice, brown chapatti, or brown ugali of finger millet or brown bread emphasize on whole grains with both the testa and the endosperm combined. In summary; eat a balanced diet containing all the basic ingredients which finally reduces the impact on your sugar levels.

the only real proven way to lose weight is hard work! that means a healthy diet, small portion sizes, and a solid work out routine. i suggest starting with food swaps :) instead of a sandwich, have a low calorie mild flavored fish like mahi mahi or tilapia with mango salsa or fresh squeezed lemon on top. it’s delicious! not to mention stuff like carrots and hummus instead of chips and dip or egg whites with veggies/turkey pepperoni instead of the real stuff (14 slices = 70 calories) will save you a lot of calories. roasted chick peas will change your life, look up a recipe. you’ll love me for it! buttered popcorn flavored rice cakes topped with salsa is only 35 calories, or spinach with some laughing cow light swiss cheese mixed in is under 100 calories, creamy and delicious! if you begin to eat healthy and work out, you’ll be golden. start to run around your neighborhood, the pounds will drop. it’s also free and totally addicting :) i know it sucks at first, but it becomes worth it. ask anyone who runs.

According to the latest information, asthma with its coughing and wheezing is up 60% from about 25 years ago.Approximately 23 million Americans now have asthma with the figures continuing to climb. Experts claim that what you eat helps fight asthma and coupled with diet will go a long way toward curing or at least reducing asthma’s inflammation.

Some of the research-based tips that were suggested:

First of all eat a Mediterranean type diet. Overall this is a good diet not only for fighting asthma but to lose weight and get healthier. The main ingredients of this diet are lots of of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and legumes, fish instead of meat, cooking with olive oil as well as staying away from white flour products and sugar. A new study finds that by eating a Mediterranean Diet the risk of asthma was cut by 78% after adjusting for gender, age, education, etc. Kids, who eat a Mediterranean diet, especially lots of oranges, apples, tomatoes and grapes, have less wheezing, allergic rhinitis and asthma. Children of mothers who followed a high-quality Mediterranean diet were 80 percent less likely to have persistent wheezing, the most common symptom of childhood asthma, the study found. They were also 45 percent less likely to develop allergies. The research, which was published in the journal Thorax, was carried out by teams from the Royal Brompton Hospital, in London; the University of Crete; Venezelio General Hospital in Crete and the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology, in Barcelona. The Faculty of Nutrition and Food Sciences, University of Porto, Porto, Portugal, and Department of Immunoallergology, Hospital of S. João, Porto, Portugal.s. reported similar findings.

If you are overweight or obese you should lose weight because your odds of developing asthma jump 50%, according to a recent review of 330,000 subjects by researchers at Denver’s National Jewish Health Center. They estimate that being overweight or obese accounts for at least 250,000 new cases of adult asthma every year. Although it’s a fact that children that are overweight increased the chances for asthma no figures were given.

Eat the good fats and avoid the bad ones. Omega-3 oil, found in certain kinds of fish (sardines, salmon, tuna) is a potent anti-inflammatory. A study by Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School and reported in Nature Immunology found that adults who ate fish with high levels of omega-3 fatty acids reduced asthmatic symptoms. These fatty acids are found in cold-water fish such as salmon, mackerel and anchovies. Adults who never ate fish as children, were more apt to develop asthma and at an earlier age. An Indiana University study shows that high doses of fish oil of at least 5 g daily helped prevent exercise-induced asthma symptoms. Stay clear of omega-6polyunsaturated fats (in corn, soybean, regular safflower and sunflower oils, and in meat and many processed foods) as much as possible, as they induce inflammation and promote asthma according to studies by the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Low sodium intake won’t help. Up until recently it was thought that a low sodium diet would help control asthma. Recently in a British study, published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, researchers compared the effects of a low-sodium vs. normal-sodium diet on asthma control in nearly 200 adults with asthma for six weeks. The study showed that subjects who restricted sodium intake for six weeks had just as many asthma symptoms as those on normal diets. It still might be a good idea to restrict your sodium intake though.

Pregnant women need to watch what they eat. Dutch research, reported in the American Journal of Respiratory and

Critical Care Medicine shows that pregnant women who eat nuts or nut products like peanut butter every day up their children’s odds of developing asthma by nearly 50%.

V&V Friends: Do you think we should ask YA for a “Mediterranean Diet” section?

Mediterranean diet, meat reducer, piscavore or pescatarian… whichever word you like to give omnivores who only eat fish, do you think we should try to get them a section?

I am sure to get lots of rude answers for this, but the pescavore/tarians probably have it tough. When they ask in the general food section about dishes where the only meat/ animal used is fish, they probably get lots of “eat steak” answers.

Then they try to come to the vegetarian section to ask about eating sea animals, which then annoys (and sometimes offends) vegetarians because vegetarians don’t eat animals.

Maybe if they got their own section, they could exchange lots of fish recipes and be happy to be around others like themselves.

YA does add sections on occasion, so maybe if enough people asked, they could get their own little panel in YA.
What are your thoughts? :)

Answer
I think it’s a great idea. I always hate to see the fish-eaters bashed as bad as the meat-eaters bash us. I am among the multitude that feels that the word vegetarian is not appropriate, but no one should be put down because they don’t do it all the way. I think having another section would be a good way for them to feel more comfortable and accepted. Let’s just hope vegetarians don’t go in their section to harass them like meat-eaters come in our section to harass us.

If you’re searching for a beneficial diet or a way of eating you have a lot of choices. The most recent scientific information validates what individuals have acknowledged for a long time. Shedding weight and decreasing bad cholesterol are very vital to most Americans and many other people around the world. The ultimate tactic to succeed with this is through natural means rather than medications. We all know so many prescribed medicines can include important side effects. Due to this, you may want to contemplate changing your fitness naturally. We will evaluate the popular Mediterranean Diet Plan and have a closer look at this important subject matter.

Improving your general health is the main goal of the Mediterranean diet. Still, it only makes sense that if you keep to a regime that is beneficial and good for you, the fat loss will be a natural outcome. In addition, it should be interesting to notice that many factors of heart disease are very low in Greece. Scientific study now shows that Mediterranean food offers many positive health benefits. Of concern is the evidence that persons live longer when heart disease and cancer are reduced.

When taking into consideration the “Mediterranean Diet”, it is important to keep in mind that it is not based on one single eating plan. It is based on a method of eating alike foods to those commonly eaten by residents of Greece and other Mediterranean countries. Other cuisines have significantly inspired Greek foods. Olive oil has long been established as good for your health. So the tactic to take when adopting this overall healthy opinion is to consume olive rather than using butter, for example. That is merely one aspect and there are more.

The Mediterranean diet also includes foods such as newly picked greens, yogurt, salad and nuts. Stuffed tomatoes are an additional universal example. If you have ever ordered a Greek salad at a exceptional restaurant, you will comprehend a prime example of this diet. Instead of pouring gobs of the traditional American salad dressing, make use of oil and vinegar. It really is not a bad idea to also avoid low fat varieties of traditional salad dressings In place of overly prepared American snacks, a typical Greek diet uses nuts as well as fresh greens.

While taking into consideration the Mediterranean Diet, don’t forget that it is characterized by widespread recommended eating lifestyle. It will be apparent to you that this weight loss approach is one that health experts have long advocated. So this is a plan to make your body more healthy, but it is also a viewpoint and mindset that means a healthful and strong lifestyle.

Is there a painless way to lower cholesterol and lose weight? Can you eat your way there? Oh sure, you might say; but wait, consider the merits of the Mediterranean Diet. Virgin olive oil may be the perfect replacement for butter and margarine.

The Mediterranean Diet: What the Greeks Know about healthy cuisine

“If you have health, you probably will be happy, and if you have health and happiness, you have all the wealth you need, even if it is not all you want.” — Elbert Hubbard.

There are so many approaches to optimum wellness. Infomercials tell us about a variety of diet plans from pills and native plants to the benefits of liquid diets over conventional weight loss methods. What should you believe?

One of the clarion calls of caution is the old adage, “If it’s too good to be true – it probably is.”

The Mediterranean Diet relies solely on age old wisdom. Present research verification demonstrates that one man’s daily meal is another man’s trip to optimum wellness.

In Greece, certain symptoms of heart disease are among the lowest in the world. It would seem that the largest body of current scientific research indicates that a diet high in fruits and veggies along with routine consumption of whole grains, legumes, fish, low fat dairy products, olive oil and nuts provide long term and protective health benefits.

With the Mediterranean diet you will find that optimal health is even more important than the accompanying weight loss. What native Greek’s have intuitively known for centuries has now been linked to scientific data that shows adherence to common Mediterranean diet practices may result in a reduction in heart disease, increased life expectancy and reduced risk of some cancers. The health benefits of olive oil have long been realized in Greece.

The term “Mediterranean Diet” truly is a generic term because the diet in Greece remains varied. You will find influences from North Africa and Italy in many Greek dishes, however the island of Crete has proven a veritable treasure trove of health research. Residents of Crete have one of the lowest heart disease risks in the world.

Interestingly, western culture is looking into the health benefits found in countries like Greece, but many of the younger population in Greece are seeking out western cuisine. The trend has proven somewhat antithetical to the wellness experienced by older Greeks. While parents are consuming melons, stuffed tomatoes, salads and yogurt, the younger Greek generation are consuming cookies, hamburgers, French fries, pizza and pop. The result is an increase in obesity among Greek’s youth culture – researchers expect to see an accompanying rise in heart disease in the years to come.

With the Mediterranean diet, butter is replaced with the health benefits of olive oil, fast food lunches are replaced by a variety of fresh vegetables – snacks of chocolate and colas are replaced by fresh fruit and nuts.

Perhaps the reason you don’t hear as much about the Mediterranean diet as you might other weight loss plans is that there is no special pill to buy, no special formula to drink and no 12-step meal plan to purchase.

The Mediterranean diet works because common sense prevails in eating choices and a rise in HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) is an indicator they are doing something right. The health benefits of olive oil cannot be overstated and traditional Greek cooking utilizes garden fresh produce and extra virgin olive oil. In tandem, this common sense approach continues to see a lower incidence of heart disease and colon cancer along with an increase in life expectancy and a decrease in overall weight.

Which Merrick Flavor (formula) would they like best? Which ones should we rule out completely?

Okay I am picking up some Merrick dog food tonight for my 2 dogs. Its for their Christmas Dinner.

Normally I keep them on a very strict diet, except on thanksgiving, christmas, and birthdays. Those days they get special dog food. (instead of their same thing every day, which is California Naturals Herring and sweet potato)

I discovered Merrick and few months ago and am very happy with their products (much better than feeding them that soft Cesar crap or alpo or ol roy or purina…you know the companies that make a lot of the soft food)

My dogs eat good the rest of the year why shouldn’t they on special occaisions as well.

So on Thanksgiving they had the Merrick: Thanksgiving Dinner.

Here are a few we are thinking of trying, but here is the kicker, only one will be chosen.

So which one do you think these 2 cuties will like the best: (by the way Zack (poodle) hates lamb but will eat it and isn’t a huge fan of chicken but will eat it, Sasha (mix) doesn’t care for Lamb but will pretty much eat anything, that is 2 things we know. They goodness they both like fish)

Here are the choices:
All are Merrick brand

Susie’s Shepherd’s Pie

Main Ingredients: Beef, Beef Broth, Buffalo, Venison, Fresh Red Apple, Potato Starch modified, Pineapple, Cranberry

Grammy’s Pot Pie
Main Ingredients: Chicken, Chicken Broth, Chicken Liver, Fresh Red Jacket New Potatoes, Fresh Carrots, Fresh Snow Peas, Fresh Red Delicious Apple

Mediterranean Banquet
Ingredients: Lamb, Lamb Broth, Lamb Liver, Whole Brown Rice, Fresh Chick Peas, Fresh Spinach, Fresh Golden Apples, Potato Starch-modified, Lamb Meal, Egg, Cottage Cheese

French Country Café
Main ingredients: Duck, Turkey Broth, Whole Ground Brown Rice, Potato Starch-modified, Dried Egg, Fresh Carrots, Fresh Whole Golden Apple, Garden Peas, Dried Apricot

Turducken (This bayou classic allows dogs to get in touch with their southern senses)
Main ingredients:
Turkey, Chicken, Chicken Broth, Duck, Fresh Sweet Potatoes, Fresh Carrots, Fresh Green Beans, Fresh Granny Smith Apples

Smothered Comfort:
Main ingredients: Chicken, Chicken Broth, Chicken Liver, Whole Barley, Fresh Carrots, Fresh Sweet Potato, Fresh Red Delicious Apples, Fresh Blueberries

Venison Holiday Stew:
main ingredients: Venison, Water for processing, Fresh Red Jacket New Potatoes, Fresh Carrots, Fresh Zucchini, Fresh Sugar Peas, Fresh Red Delicious Apples, Potato Starch-modified, Egg, Dried Blueberry

I know our store carries most of these, except I’m not sure about the last one.
ADD: For those that might be concerned that it will mess with their tummys….it doesn’t. We’ve done this their whole lives (Merrick has been the best though)

What we do is: We mix a small amount of the soft food in with their regular Kibble. They get it for about 2-3 days and then that is it

Answer
Well, I’ve been feeding Merrick for 2 years now. (after switching from a food that I fed for 30 years) My dog’s like all of them, but IMO, Turducken is the best.
