I follow an (almost vegetarian) mediterranean diet. Is it a good idea to stop consuming milk and its products?
After all, vegans often claim that there are lots of hormones and things like that in Milk.
Also, how can I make sure that I’m getting all the nutrients I need?
Answer
I also follow a (very nearly) vegetarin diet and have almost completely stopped eating dairy products and have found it beneficial for me (I’m self-diagnosted lactose intolerant). If you have Silk (brand) soy milk available I highly recommend giving it a try. It is organic, tastes great, has good shelf life and can even be mixed with hot beverages (like coffee) unlike most other soy milks (that’s why Starbucks now has it available). It is also fortified with vitamin D and is a great source of protein without the animal fat.
Yes, milk is said to contain hormones which have been blamed for girls starting their periods earlier etc. I personally think that the future is soy milk!

Comparing diets from different regions of the world…?
I’ve been in the Martial Arts for a long time and I’m also an Army Cadet so diet is very important in my training. However, recently I’ve decided to become more stringent with it. I’ve been doing quite a bit of research on different kinds of diets that peoples from across the globe have had from the Mediterranean to the Eastern Asian. It would seem that at least before people started to mess with food, these diets gave the necessities for building strong and durable bodies and at the same time improving the immune system as well as bodily functions. Although I don’t necessarily intend to stick to one particular diet (such as Greek, Indian, Japanese, etc) I was curious, in your opinion, which diet from which region was most beneficial to it’s people? Or is this an apples and oranges question? I figured that the peoples of those regions would utilize what was available to them but I figured as people across the globe encountered and traded with one another, the cuisines would end up mixing as well.
Steve O – Boy do I agree. I like it but man…never eat it and go on a run until 24hrs have passed.
Answer
I find that Greek diets tend to work best. “80% of the Greek cuisine is made up of various greens like spinach, green beans and grape leaves” Greeks have a long life expectancy and typically live longer. I would say that its a good idea to eat a little bit of everything though. (Except Indian…the only thing its good for with me is its a colon cleaner.)

Mediterranean style foods?
I’m trying to go on a low-fat mediterranean food diet. I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions of low fat mediterranean foods/snacks. Thanks so much- you’re such a big help!!
Answer
The key with Mediterrean food is healthy fats, seafood, fruit & greens. Limit your starch, & if you’re going to have starch, make sure a low-saturated fat, such as olive oil, is mixed in. It helps slow digestion.
As for snacks, try 6-8 olives stuffed with pimento or blue cheese. A few of those goes a long way to keeping you filled. Olives are a source of really important Omega fats & a little fat keeps your brain healthy, your hair shiny, etc. Another great snack is any fresh veggie dipped in tzaziki (mix 1 c plain yogurt (or greek yogurt) with 2 T lemon juice, 1/2 a minced cucumber & a pinch of dried mint leaves). There are a ton of tzaziki recipes on the internet to try. Mediterrean people love whole foods – try to get as close to the source as you can (whole fresh fruit, as little cooking as possible).

Good luck!

Why don’t we get this out of the way – there are many books out there that sell false hopes and unhealthy gimmicks for weight reduction – this is not one. Focuses on isn’t one of those popular fad diets like Atkins or South Beach. This program provides you with the information to create a healthy lifestyle that may help you slim down and it well. Answer
the only real proven way to lose weight is hard work! that means a healthy diet, small portion sizes, and a solid work out routine. i suggest starting with food swaps
instead of a sandwich, have a low calorie mild flavored fish like mahi mahi or tilapia with mango salsa or fresh squeezed lemon on top. it’s delicious! not to mention stuff like carrots and hummus instead of chips and dip or egg whites with veggies/turkey pepperoni instead of the real stuff (14 slices = 70 calories) will save you a lot of calories. roasted chick peas will change your life, look up a recipe. you’ll love me for it! buttered popcorn flavored rice cakes topped with salsa is only 35 calories, or spinach with some laughing cow light swiss cheese mixed in is under 100 calories, creamy and delicious! if you begin to eat healthy and work out, you’ll be golden. start to run around your neighborhood, the pounds will drop. it’s also free and totally addicting
i know it sucks at first, but it becomes worth it. ask anyone who runs.

What are some regions of the world with good and bad diets?
We all hear about how the mediterranean diet is good. I try my best to follow this one with plenty of olive oil, salmon, tuna, tomato and avocado-based products, citrus fruits, and some red wine. What are some of the other healthy diets? I would presume East Asian diets are good too, with all that tea….What are some other good ones?
We all know that most Americans don’t eat well (although thanks to the variety of foods from abroad, this is abated somewhat, for those who can afford it). I doubt Latino diets are a whole lot better, particularly Brazil and Argentina with all that beef. What are some other poor ones?
Answer
Indian food depending on how you cook it has a wide range of healthy dishes. Lean cuts of meat to lots of vegetables.
Canada is much like the US. Pretty bad diet. Hight in processed foods, lots of salt and fat.
A lot of other Asian cuisine is rather healthy as well.

mediterranean Food. What is, and what isn’t.?
Ok, Im not Greek( Im native american/german mix) but my boyfriend is very greek. He claims the Greeks invented the mediterranean diet, which i partly agree with. But, my question is I’ve also seen french foods, and italian foods labeled as Mediteranean. Who’s right? Greek Boyfriend, or Marketing People????
Answer
It’s called “mediterranean” and not “Greek” or “Italian” for a reason…
“Mediterranean diet” is a concept first made by American scientist Ancel Keys and his book “Eat well and stay well, the Mediterranean way”, written when he was in Italy, btw.
“Seven Countries Study” is a reasearch done after that, you can google for it.
Nobody “invented” mediterranean food, food from Countries in Mediterranean basin (especially Spain, Italy, Greece and Southern France) have some important characteristics in common, naturally developed along the centuries.
