What kind of food should I eat to help me build my iron and lower my cholesterol?

Those are two other things my doctor told me on my check up my heart is getting bad and my iron is low and my cholesterol is high. He said to check in to the Mediterranean Diet but no one here seemed to know too much about it. I guess I should just lower my calories and still with a family I do not know how to do that for me and still feed them.
Thank you.

Answer
Lean RED meat is an excellent source of iron.
Beef would be the choice in this area.
LEAN is the key word here.

Why does the Mediterranean diet consists of only 8 oz. of fish per week? ?

Why does the Mediterranean diet suggest that one only eats about 8 oz. of fish once a week? [And poultry once a week. 0-4 eggs per week, beef once per month.]
So for most days of the week, people who follow this diet are practically vegetarians?

Answer
A diet should be low in fats and proteins. The amounts of meat you are describing in this diet are more than adequate to provide you with all of the protein you will need to stay healthy.

V&V Friends: Do you think we should ask YA for a “Mediterranean Diet” section?

Mediterranean diet, meat reducer, piscavore or pescatarian… whichever word you like to give omnivores who only eat fish, do you think we should try to get them a section?

I am sure to get lots of rude answers for this, but the pescavore/tarians probably have it tough. When they ask in the general food section about dishes where the only meat/ animal used is fish, they probably get lots of “eat steak” answers.

Then they try to come to the vegetarian section to ask about eating sea animals, which then annoys (and sometimes offends) vegetarians because vegetarians don’t eat animals.

Maybe if they got their own section, they could exchange lots of fish recipes and be happy to be around others like themselves.

YA does add sections on occasion, so maybe if enough people asked, they could get their own little panel in YA.
What are your thoughts? :)

Answer
I think it’s a great idea. I always hate to see the fish-eaters bashed as bad as the meat-eaters bash us. I am among the multitude that feels that the word vegetarian is not appropriate, but no one should be put down because they don’t do it all the way. I think having another section would be a good way for them to feel more comfortable and accepted. Let’s just hope vegetarians don’t go in their section to harass them like meat-eaters come in our section to harass us.

If I eat healthy foods and exercise, can I reverse damage from a poor diet?

32 year old male. This year I changed my diet to a Vegetarian/Mediterranean diet and I run 5 or 6 days per week for cardio and work out. I ate a very poor diet, fast food and such, for most of my life. Will changing my diet as I have reverse any damage I probably did to my body by eating poorly and not working out? If yes, how long does something like that take?

Answer
It could’ve been worse. On a scale of 1 – 100%, maybe something like 40-50%. If you are serious about this new lifestyle change, then you will be able to reverse almost all of that.

Remember your body has been eating chemicals that ‘like fat’. Chickens are injected with hormones to gain fat, and eating alot of KFC will pass on those hormones, build up and make you absorb fat. However this is completely reversible.

Also, did you know eating more sugar damages the part of the brain which tells you when to stop eating / you’re eating bad food? This is probably irreversible, but alot of it is down to habit and training yourself to not eat bad food, instead of relying on your body to tell you you’ve been eating bad food.

Seriously permanant damage that is like… 80%-90% is anorexia and bulimia. They’re worse off because their bodies will never be able to exit that ‘starvation mode’ and they will gain weight, etc etc.

Congrats though on the lifestyle change – you had a lifetime of eating fastfood. You need to spend the rest of your life fixing that, because this body has got to last you for the rest of your life!
:)

I forgot to mention:
You will probably be able to lose weight pretty fast during the first year. However internally it will take probably more like 5 years to get a body that will work for you (ie, you can relax and it won’t return to its previous condition)

USE IT OR LOSE IT.

Mediterranean style foods?

I’m trying to go on a low-fat mediterranean food diet. I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions of low fat mediterranean foods/snacks. Thanks so much- you’re such a big help!! :)

Answer
The key with Mediterrean food is healthy fats, seafood, fruit & greens. Limit your starch, & if you’re going to have starch, make sure a low-saturated fat, such as olive oil, is mixed in. It helps slow digestion.

As for snacks, try 6-8 olives stuffed with pimento or blue cheese. A few of those goes a long way to keeping you filled. Olives are a source of really important Omega fats & a little fat keeps your brain healthy, your hair shiny, etc. Another great snack is any fresh veggie dipped in tzaziki (mix 1 c plain yogurt (or greek yogurt) with 2 T lemon juice, 1/2 a minced cucumber & a pinch of dried mint leaves). There are a ton of tzaziki recipes on the internet to try. Mediterrean people love whole foods – try to get as close to the source as you can (whole fresh fruit, as little cooking as possible).

Good luck!
